Who are Generation X?

Generation X refers to those of you born between the larger Baby Boomer and Millennial generations. Usually, there are no fixed years of birth attributed to your generation, but you are commonly considered to be Gen X if you were born after the mid 1960s and before the mid 1980s.

As children, you were exposed to more time in daycare and higher levels of divorce than previous groups, resulting in the nickname of “latchkey” kids. This has led to your generation becoming independent, resourceful, and very generous when it comes to your own children.

Generation X Sandwiched Between Millennials And Baby Boomers

Some argue that you have the benefit of sharing the strengths of your neighboring groups, the Boomers and Millennials, without the perceived downsides of either. Because of this, you are often regarded as hard working, adaptable, technologically savvy individuals with a desire to build a healthy work-life balance.

Your position in society has its downsides too, unfortunately. Economically, your generation came of age just before the dot com crash of the early 2000s. This meant that you didn’t have years of prosperity to build up your investments, like earlier generations did, and potentially lost money after interest rates plummeted. Many of you may have lost your jobs too, and your savings would likely have taken a hit. Following that, you were hit by the recession in the later 2000s.

Generation X’s Financial Struggles

Additionally, your generation are in the unfortunate position of being financially responsible for your Millennial children. Millennials are facing their own economic struggles, causing many to fall back on the ‘Bank of Mom and Dad.’ Costs of living are increasing, not least when it comes to school fees and rent for the younger generation, and so many of you are having to work extra hard to provide for your families.

These financial difficulties have led many of you to spend more than you earn, resulting in high levels of debt within your generational group. Some of you are even having to work 60+ hours a week to try to support your families and maintain payments. You’re faced with the prospect of having to work well into your 70s, robbing you of the leisurely retirement you deserve.
